"A Christmas Carol - A Timeless Gem"

As 2023 draws to a close, no one has been spared the uncertainty and concerning developments ranging from climate change to political uncertainty.  As much as we’ve all tried to revert back to normal living, we’re realizing that life isn’t quite the same as before.  The world has changed, and we have little influence over it.

But here is a year-end thought that you can control and fulfil.

Treasure Principle – The Secret Of Joyful Giving (adapted from Randy Alcorn’s Treasure Principle)

We are often so absorbed with getting what’s ours that we miss what brings real blessing and joy – giving God what is His.  Giving is doing what we were made for: loving God and our neighbors.  It is a blessed act that leads to joy.

A graphic example of this joy is found in Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol.  When the story begins, Ebenezer Scrooge is wealthy and miserable.  He’s caustic, complaining and horrendously greedy.

After encounters with three spirits on Christmas Day, he is given a second chance at life.  Dickens’ description of what transformed Scrooge stand out:

He went to church, and walked about the streets and watched the people hurrying to and fro, and patted children on the head, and questioned beggars, and looked down into kitchens of houses, and up to the windows, and found everything that could yield him pleasure.  He had never dreamed that any walk – that anything – could give him so much happiness.

After his transformation, Scrooge walks through the streets of London, freely distributing his wealth to the needy.  He is giddy with delight.  He, who only yesterday had scoffed at the idea of charity, now takes his greatest pleasure in giving.

On the story’s final page, Dickens says of Scrooge:

Some people laughed to see the alteration in him, but he let them laugh, and little heeded them.. His own heart laughed, and that was quite enough for him.  And it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge.

What was the source of Scrooge’s transformation? Gaining an eternal perspective. Through supernatural intervention, Scrooge was allowed to see his past, present and still-changeable future through the eyes of eternity. Let us ask God for the same insight into our lives.

Ebenezer Scrooge leaped for joy on the streets of London because he’d discovered the life-giving antidote to the materialism that had poisoned his soul.  Scrooge learned the secret of joyful giving.
